A family escaped injuries when a fire broke out at their Costa Mesa home, but their cat had to be rescued by firefighters, city officials reported.
The fire broke out a home in the 800 block of Santiago Road shortly after midnight on Friday, according to the city of Costa Mesa. The family was able to escape from the house without being injured after a smoke detector alerted them to the blaze, but their cat wasn't as lucky.
Responding firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the garage and roof line, and were able to get the fire under control before it spread to the inside of the home. They found the family's cat inside a smoke-filled room and gave it oxygen once they took it outside, officials reported.
Twenty-five firefighters, four engines and two trucks responded to the house fire. Officials said no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
