Firefighters Injured Battling Condo Fire

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a blaze on Sunday at a condominium on Odyssey Court in Newport Beach.

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a condominium fire Sunday for more than two hours, a fire official reported today.

The fire was reported Sunday at 1:40 p.m. at a three-story condominium building on Odyssey Court when the residents noticed the patio was on fire and called 911, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department. Several firefighters fought the fire for more than two hours and were able to limit the damage to three units. Four firefighters suffered minor burns and heat exhaustion as a result of the fire.

Two Costa Mesa firefighters and one Newport Beach Firefighter were treated at the scene, and one Newport Beach Firefighter was treated and later released from Hoag Hospital.

Responding firefighters quickly attacked the fire, but it had already begun to extend through the walls of the home and into the attic. The fire caused approximately $150,000 in damage to the condominium.

Officials say the fire started on the balcony of one of the condominium units and appears to have been accidental.
