Update: Firefighters Injured Battling Garage Fire

Two firefighters from Newport Beach and Costa Mesa suffered non life-threatening injuries today fighting a garage fire.

Two firefighters were hurt today while putting out a fire that destroyed a garage.

The blaze at 322 23rd St. started about 11:15 a.m., according to Costa Mesa Fire Battalion Chief Bill Kershaw. The fire on the border of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa was extinguished in about 20 minutes, Kershaw said.

A Newport Beach firefighter suffered first- and second-degree burns and was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Kershaw said. A Costa Mesa firefighter was treated at Hoag for heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation and later released, Kershaw added.

"The garage was a total loss as well as a boat on the side,'' Kershaw said. Firefighters managed to keep the blaze from spreading to the house, but the home did have some smoke damage, Kershaw said. The resident was able to get a car out of the garage before the flames spread, Kershaw said.

The cause was under investigation, Kershaw said.
