Firefighter Olympics Held in Newport Beach this Week

The Newport Beach Firefighters Association hosts the 2011 California Firefighter's Olympics.

More than 4,000 firefighters and their families are expected to visit Newport Beach this week as the 2011 California Firefighter's Olympics is underway.

The Newport Beach Firefighters Association is hosting the games ,which begin today and run through July 15. Firefighters will compete in more than 30 sporting events at locations in Newport Beach and throughout Orange County. The public is welcome to come and attend the events.  

"The Olympics routinely draws over 4,000 firefighters and family members to the host city. These people will be eating in our restaurants and shopping in our stores," Jennifer Schulz, of the Newport Beach Fire Department, said. "This is an opportunity to promote our local businesses to the firefighting community and say thank you to the community for all of its support to firefighters."

The Firefighter Olympics began in 1970 as an opportunity for California Firefighters to come together in the spirit of friendly competition to promote physical fitness and camaraderie among the firefighter family. All events and locations are listed at www.firefighterolympics.org
