Earthquake and Tsunami Workshop Planned for Newport Beach

The workshop will be held Wednesday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Newport Beach Civic Center.

The Newport Beach Fire Department has been planning for several years to prepare for the threat of a tsunami and major earthquake, and residents are urged to learn how they can help in the event of an emergency.

On Wednesday, May 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., fire officials will host a free Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness Workshop in Newport Beach. In a city memo, officials said 40,000 Newport Beach residents live in the pre-identified tsunami inundation area. The workshop will focus on the earthquake and tsunami threat to Newport Beach, highlight what the city is doing to prepare for unexpected disasters and explain to residents how to get prepared.

The city has been recognized by the National Weather Service as "a Tsunami Ready community due to numerous planning efforts."
