Update: Woman Killed in Early Morning Newport Beach Crash

Police say the female passenger died at the scene. Motorists are urged to avoid MacArthur Boulevard.

A female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of an early morning car accident today in Newport Beach, police say.

The Orange County coroner's office identified the victim as Angelina Paz, 45, of Costa Mesa. The fatal single-vehicle accident occurrred about 3:35 a.m. near MacArthur Boulevard and Ford Road, according to Kathy Lowe, police spokeswoman. 

"The vehicle was traveling southbound on MacArthur Boulevard, south of Vilaggio, when it struck a light pole on the west curb line," Lowe said.

Another passenger in the car was transported to a local hospital, her condition was unknown. The male driver declined treatment, police said.

Lowe said the accident is under investigation, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor. Motorists are encouraged to avoid southbound Macarthur and Ford Road due to the police investigation and traffic congestion.
