By City News Service

An 81-year-old Newport Beach man was killed in a car crash in Irvine early Friday, police said.

The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of kin, was turning into a parking lot near Michelson and University drives about 7:30 a.m. when his car was struck by vehicle westbound on University, according to Irvine police Lt. Tom Allan.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 34-year-old man, was taken to a nearby hospital but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police shut down all the westbound lanes of University between Michelson and Ridgeline Drive during the investigation, and the closure was expected to last several more hours, Allan said.
