Man Arrested After SWAT Standoff Faces Several Felony Charges

David Charles Wilson was expected to be arraigned Wednesday on several felony charges stemming from alleged sexual assaults, the district attorney's office said.

A man arrested Monday following a nearly seven-hour standoff with Newport Beach police has been charged with several felonies stemming from alleged sexual assaults on a woman who authorities say was held against her will in the man's Camden Drive home.

David Charles Wilson, 48, was expected to be arraigned Wednesday. He has been charged with with one felony count each of aggravated assault, criminal threats, forcible oral copulation, false imprisonment by violence, three felony counts each of forcible rape and sexual penetration by foreign object by force, and one misdemeanor count of resisting or obstructing an officer, the Orange County district attorney's office said.

Authorities say a 29-year-old woman, identified as Jane Doe, went to Wilson's home in the 4600 block of Camden Drive about 10 p.m. Monday. The two had met a few months earlier and had spoken several times on the phone, the D.A.'s office said. Wilson began to choke and threaten to kill the woman as soon as she entered the residence, the D.A.'s office said. Authorities say Wilson sexually assaulted the woman in several rooms in his house and refused to let her leave.

Before going to Wilson's house, the D.A.'s office said, the woman told a friend about her plans. After several failed attempts to call the woman beginning at about 12:30 a.m., the friend became concerned and drove to Wilson's house. She called out for the woman from in front of the house, and the woman was able to escape through a window and get to her friend's car, the D.A.'s office said.

A neighbor heard yelling and called 911, the D.A.'s office said. Police and SWAT officers responded.

"Upon arrival, the officers located a car leaving the scene with two females inside," police spokesman Sgt. Steve Burdette said. "One of the women said she was held against her will and raped at the Camden address."

Police went to the house and tried to make contact with Wilson, but he refused to open the door and did not answer his phone.

“At that point we set up a perimeter and brought in our hostage and negotiation teams to see if they could make contact,” Burdette said.

Wilson finally came out of the house just before 10 a.m.

Wilson could face up to 58 years in prison if convicted, the D.A.'s office said.
