Curfew Violators Targeted During Spring Break

The curfew, which prohibits public loitering by minors from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., is intended to prevent crime and keep minors safe, police say.

Spring break started Monday for students throughout the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. In an effort to keep kids safe, and from causing trouble, throughout the break, police are focusing on enforcing the city's  juvenile curfew.

The nighttime curfew prohibits minors from loitering in public streets, alleys and other public places between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Newport Beach police Sgt. Steve Burdette said the curfew enforcement is in response to a recent increase in theft-related crimes committed throughout the city during nighttime hours by juveniles, but is also intended to keep kids from becoming crime victims themselves.
