Cop Calls: Newport Home Burglaries

In one case, a suspect forced open a side door at a home on Topside Lane.

Newport Beach police have been busy responding to several home burglaries in different parts of the city. Police say it is important for residents to take precautions to decrease the chance of becoming a victim of a residential burglary.

  • Police say sometime between Wednesday, June 6 at 9 p.m. and Thursday, June 7 at 7:15 a.m. an unknown suspected entered a home in the 1000 block of North Bay Front. The burglar went into the home through a garage door that was accidentally left open and the pedestrian door leading inside the house was left unlocked. The victim reported a Bose stereo, router, modem and a CD stolen from the house.
  • On Saturday, June 16 between 7 and 9 p.m. an unknown suspect entered a home in the 4000 block of Topside Lane. Police say the suspect forced open a side door and stole jewelry, watches and a slot machine.
  • Police say sometime between Sunday, June 17 at 10:15 a.m. and Thursday, June 21 at 6:15 p.m., an unknown suspect entered a home in the 400 block of Iris Avenue by forcing open a set of French doors. The victim said jewelry and a Louis Vuitton purse were taken from the home.
  • Sometime between Saturday, June 23 at noon and Sunday, June 24 at 11:30 a.m., an unknown suspect entered a home in the 2300 block of Aralia through unknown means. The victim said two plastic outdoor trashcans and a large stamp collection were stolen.

Home Security Tips:

- Close and lock all doors, windows and garage door.

- All exterior doors should be equipped with a deadbolt lock, which should always be used have a security strike plate, attached with a minimum of two, three inch screws.

- If you have an alarm, always activate it when you are away.

- Use photo cells or timers to turn both interior and exterior lights on and off.

- If you are going to be out of town, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to check on your home and pick up your mail. Signup for a vacation check from the police department at www.nbpd.org

Don't Open the Doors to Strangers:

- Install and use a peephole with a minimum 190 degree view.

- When you go to the door, have your phone with you.

- Acknowledge you are home without opening the door.

- If the individual acts suspiciously, call the police department immediately and provide them with a description of the subject and why you thought their behavior was suspicious.
