Cross seldom wears a life jacket while kayaking, a family member told the Coast Guard.

Cross' family first reported him missing to Huntington Beach police, but it was not clear that he lives in that city. Huntington Beach investigators have handed the case over to Newport Beach police because Cross went missing from the Newport harbor, according to Huntington Beach police. Investigators found his car parked at the harbor.

Newport Beach police and the Orange County Sheriff's Newport Harbor patrol were helping the Coast Guard with the search. The Coast Guard is using an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter out of San Diego helped with the search this morning, but has since left the hunt, Eggers said.
