California Highway Patrol officers will be out in force this Fourth of July weekend, beginning today, on the lookout for people driving while impaired.

"Our goal is to use education and enforcement to get the message out: to be responsible this weekend," said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. "We want everyone to have a treat Independence Day weekend, but was also want you to do it safely and responsibly."

The "maximum enforcement period" will begin at 6 p.m. and continue through 11:59 p.m. Sunday. During that time, all available officers around the state will be deployed to patrol the roadways.

Rod, the Constitution says many things which are being challenged and in fact have been overruled by various lower courts... including the ability to stop people to check their driver's licenses. Therefore it's called DUI/CDL check and as far as I know is quite legal.

Lower courts can't overrule the Supreme Court. Even the congress and the president can't change overrule or ignore a decision by the Supreme Court. These actions are only legal because the average citizen submits themselves to these actions... Much like an immigration checkpoint that is nowhere near our countries border.

Buster - random DUI checkpoints are constitutional. Lorelei - no federal or state court can overrule the SC.

There is only a time/manner/place restriction on DUI stops in California. A static location is allowed, with every car that passes through checked. The reason is to avoid targeting based on impermissible grounds.
