A handful of cars in Newport Beach, some of which were unlocked, were recently targeted by suspects who stole items out of the vehicles, police reported.
Police say before you walk away from your car, take valuables out or hide them from plain sight. Remembers car doors should be locked at all times, as well as windows and sunroofs.
• Police say sometime between Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6, a burglar smashed a window of a car parked in the 300 block of Colton Street. A backpack with emergency preparedness supplies was stolen.
• Sometime between Friday, Sept. 28 and Monday, Oct. 1, a thief stole a checkbook from a car parked in the 1100 block of Rutland Road. Police say the window was open and the suspect tried to pass three of the stolen checks.
• An unlocked car parked in the 100 block of Apolena Avenue was also recently targeted by a thief. Police say a laptop, Nintendo DS, iPod and a power cord were taken from the car.
