Police: Burglar Uses Hidden Key to Enter CDM Home

Police say spare keys should be left with a trusted neighbor, not under a doormat or in a flower pot.

A burglar used a key hidden at a Corona del Mar home to break in and steal several items, Newport Beach police reported this week.

The incident occurred between Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m and Monday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. at a home in the 400 block of Heliotrope Avenue, according to police. The victim reported two watches, jewelry, several guns, money and a black suitcase missing from the home.

Kathy Lowe, police spokeswoman, says residents should never leave a key hidden around their home.

"Many times criminals will check under doormats, flowerpots, or on top of door frames for keys," Lowe said. "We highly recommend that rather than hiding a key on your property, you give a spare key to a trusted neighbor."

Home Security Tips:

- All exterior doors should be equipped with a deadbolt lock, which should always be used have a security strike plate, attached with a minimum of two, three inch screws.

- If you have an alarm, always activate it when you are away.

- Use photo cells or timers to turn both interior and exterior lights on and off.

- If you are going to be out of town, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to check on your home and pick up your mail. Sign up for a vacation check from the police department at www.nbpd.org
