A bicyclist was killed Wednesday evening when he was struck by a car in Newport Beach, a fire captain reported.

The crash occurred about 7:42 p.m. when a car driving on San Joaquin Hills Road and Marguerite Avenue hit a man on a bike, according to Newport Beach Fire Capt. Brett Sutherland. On Thursday the coroner's office identified the victim as Paul Lin, 41, of Irvine.

Lin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said the preliminary investigation shows Lin was traveling northbound on Marguerite Avenue and was turning left to continue westbound on San Joaquin Hills Road. A Ford SUV was traveling westbound on San Joaquin Hills Road when the crash happened.

As of Friday police were continuing to investigate the fatal crash. Manzella said the driver of the SUV was not cited at the scene of the crash.

"Fault will be determined through the course of our investigation," Manzella added.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Investigator Scott Grecco at 949-644-3747 or sgrecco@nbpd.org.
