Bicyclist Injured in Light Pole Crash

The bicyclist suffered unknown injuries in the crash on East Coast Highway.

A bicyclist was injured last week after colliding with a street light pole, police reported.

The crash took place on Thursday about 2:45 p.m. at Jasmine Avenue and East Coast Highway. Kathy Lowe, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Police Department, says a car was going east on East Coast Highway and started to make a left hand turn onto Jasmine Avenue when the driver saw the bicyclist going west on East Coast Highway.

"The bicyclist, in an attempt to avoid the stopped vehicle, collided with a street light located on the northwest curb line," Lowe explained. "No contact was made between the vehicle and bicyclist."

The bicyclist was taken to Hoag Hospital with unknown injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

As I understand that description, the cyclist was on a slight downhill approaching the Jasmine Ave intersection. A car pulling in front of him from the left would have sent him bailing for the right side of the road, which is a smooth concrete gutter pan - often wet from lawn watering runoff up Jasmine Avenue. Here's a street view of the cyclist's pov there: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=east+coast+highway+and+jasmine+ave+newport+beach&hl=en&ll=33.59819%2C-117.871653&spn=0.000449%2C0.000495&hnear=East+Coast+Hwy+%26+Jasmine+Ave%2C+Newport+Beach%2C+Orange%2C+California+92625&t=h&z=21&layer=c&cbll=33.59819%2C-117.871653&panoid=bvJuJH7twq43y7-qttlk1w&cbp=12%2C349.15%2C%2C0%2C16.54
