Bicyclist Injured After Falling Off Bike

A 40-year-old woman suffered a head injury Saturday after falling off her bike on Newport Coast Road near the 73 Freeway.

A woman suffered a head injury today after falling off her bike in Newport Coast, a fire captain reported.

The 40-year-old bicyclist was riding her bike about 8 a.m. Saturday on Newport Coast Road near the 73 Freeway, according to Newport Beach Fire Capt. Mike Liberto. Emergency responders found the bicyclist unconscious on the side of the road. The woman's husband and bystanders were by her side before the paramedics arrived.

The woman was taken to Mission Hospital Trauma Center with serious injuries, Liberto said. She was wearing bicycle safety gear.

The cause of the woman's fall is under investigation. No cars were involved, Liberto said.
