Balboa Pier Reopens After Boat Struck It in Fog

None of the 13 people aboard the vessel, named Lucky 7, were injured in the crash.

Balboa Pier reopened this morning after being struck by a 55-foot boat that lost power and drifted through thick fog.

A few of the pier's pilings were damaged in the incident that happened about 8 p.m. Sunday, but city personnel inspected the property and deemed it ready for reopening, said Jennifer Manzella, public information officer with the Newport Beach Police Department.

None of the 13 people aboard the vessel, named Lucky 7, were injured in the crash.

Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol Deputy William Nelson said the boat was about 800 feet offshore when he got a call from someone on the boat about losing power.

Local lifeguards and Harbor Patrol deputies said the Lucky 7 sustained "pretty good" structural damage.
