An autopsy will be necessary to determine the cause of death of a 58-year-old man whom the California Highway Patrol said died after his Electra Cruiser bicycle collided with a bicycle driven by a 52-year-old man on the Santa Ana River bike trail.
The Orange County coroner's office today identified the cyclist as Johnathan Coontz, of Costa Mesa.
Coontz was riding his beach cruiser northbound on the bike trail at Atlanta Avenue at 6:05 p.m. Friday when he drifted into the southbound lane and collided with the southbound cyclist, according to CHP Officer J. Bell.
Coontz was transported to Western Medical Center Santa Ana where he was pronounced dead, Bell said. The other cyclist was also transported to Western Medical Center where he was treated for moderate injuries.
