A 49-year-old Seal Beach coach was charged today with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in one of his camps, starting nearly a decade ago.
Scott Anthony Durzo, owner of Scott Durzo's Total Sport Camp, made his first appearance in court today when he was ordered held on $250,000 bail, according to Deputy District Attorney Bobby Taghavi, who requested $1 million bail.
Durzo is accused of sexually assaulting the victim, starting when he was 13 in the summer of 2005 through 2009, Taghavi said. Durzo met the victim, who came forward to authorities April 25, at one of the defendant's sports camps, the prosecutor added.
Durzo allegedly showed the victim pornography, Taghavi said.
Investigators were concerned there may be more victims because Durzo has been running his camps for 30 years and was also a basketball coach at Los Alamitos High School, Taghavi said.
"Usually in these cases the access (to youths) is what starts a lot of the conduct, which is why we do the press releases and urge families to talk to their kids," Taghavi said.
Seal Beach police have been fielding a deluge of phone calls from concerned parents and tipsters since Durzo's recent arrest, Taghavi said.
Durzo did not enter a plea today. His arraignment was rescheduled until June 6.
Durzo is charged with nine counts of lewd acts on a child younger than 14, seven counts of lewd acts on a child younger than 14 or 15, a count of sodomy with a minor and a count of displaying pornography to a minor, all felonies. He also faces a sentencing enhancement allegation for substantial sexual conduct with a child.
Durzo could face up to 30 years in prison if he is convicted at trial.
