Antipsychotics Found in Body of Track Star Among 3 Killed in PCH Crash

The coroner's report says Julie Allen suffered from bipolar disorder and died from vehicular blunt force trauma.

A toxicology report issued by the Orange County coroner's office shows Julie Allen, the former Corona del Mar High School track star who was one of three people killed in January in a high-speed crash, suffered from bipolar disorder and had been taking antipsychotic drugs.

According to the coroner's report released Monday, olanzapine and quetiapine —drugs prescribed to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder—were found in the 27-year-old Allen's body. No alcohol, marijuana, opiates, cocaine or other drugs were detected. Allen's cause of death was listed as a laceration to the brain with massive skull fracture due to vehicular blunt force trauma, the report said.

According to police, Allen was driving a Ford Taurus east on West Coast Highway near Riverside Avenue in Newport Beach at an excessive rate of speed about 2:45 p.m. Jan. 15. Her car crossed onto the other side of the road, hitting three vehicles before slamming into the passenger door of a Toyota Tacoma.

Christopher De La Cruz, 49, of Laguna Niguel and Linda Burnett, 69, of Santa Ana were killed in the pickup, the coroner said. The cause of the crash, which involved 10 vehicles, remains under investigation, police said.

Allen had been a runner at Corona del Mar High and later at Stanford University.
