A 55-year-old male bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle in Laguna Beach Tuesday night.

The collision occurred on the northbound lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway at the intersection with Emerald Bay around 6:55 p.m., Laguna Beach Police Department Sgt. Eric Lee said.

The cyclist was later identified as John Greg Colvin, who passed away at 11:32 pm from his injuries.

Both the victim and the 19-year-old driver were from Laguna Beach, Lee said.

9-1-1 callers said the Prius fled the scene and was northbound on Coast Highway, according to a Laguna Beach Police Department press release. It was followed by another witness who called “911” and said the vehicle stopped in the El Morro Elementary School parking lot at 8681 North Coast Highway.

Prior to the accident, the Prius was traveling northbound in the number two lane of North Coast Highway in the Emerald Bay area. The bicyclist was also traveling northbound on the right side of the roadway. For an unknown reason, the Prius struck the bicyclist, officials said.

The collision was under investigation, but the driver had not been detained or cited, Lee said.

Chip Long June 18, 2014 at 08:09 PM When you ride on Pacific Coast Highway, you take your live into you own hands. Bikes and cars on the same roadways . .. there are going to be accidents. Pass all the laws that you want, but we are still going to have accidents. Hell, you don't have to read or speak English to drive in this country. Good luck bike riders, you are going to need it.

How is this not hit and run? "Prius fled the scene and was northbound on Coast Highway, according to a Laguna Beach Police Department press release. It was followed by another witness who called “911”

Laguna Beach LEO's have a lot of explaining to do IMO. Citations are issued for wearing 2 earbuds not having reflectors and lights while cycling at night etc. Not that these things aren't important but...No arrest, no citation for a hit and run while killing a cyclist in the process. Way beyond ridiculous!

Is there an update about the driver being charged? These hit and run incidents are now an epidemic.
