Rescuers Honored at Newport Party

Over the summer, first responders made about 3,500 water rescues, 7,000 medical calls and 700 lost-at-sea reports, all without loss of life.

As the sun set on Newport Beach’s Back Bay, guests at the 14th annual Newport Beach Fire and Lifeguard Appreciation Beach Party began to trickle into Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort.

The celebration honored Newport's firefighter of the year, Justin Carr, as well as marine safety officer of the year George Leeper and seasonal lifeguard of the year Chip Going.

“It’s such a blessing in such a rewarding way,” said Going. “I pray that I can continue in helping to make a difference on the beaches for many years to come.”

Over the summer, Newport Beach shores handled about 9 million visitors. According to the Newport Beach Fire Department, first responders racked up about 3,500 water rescues, 7,000 medical calls, and 700 lost-at-sea reports, all without loss of life.

“We understand that the beaches of Newport are our best asset,” said Leeper. “We want [the visitors] to all go home happy and safe. We pride ourselves in having beaches that are second to none.”

Each honoree gave a speech thanking friends, families and co-workers, as well the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Commodores Club, which hosted the event.

“I stand here as a representative for all of you guys," firefighter Carr said. "I feel like this is an award for all of us, not just for me.”

In addition to the speeches and ceremony, children frolicked along the beach, while adults enjoyed cocktails, appetizers and live music by MPG. Company 77, a firetruck-turned-pizzeria, was also on hand.
