The Tunnel to Towers Run will take place this weekend in Newport Beach as part of a nationwide tribute to a fallen New York City Firefighter. The run will also raise money to build homes for wounded combat veterans and other military families.
The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run begins at 8 a.m. Sunday at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina in honor of Stephen Siller, 34, an NYC Firefighter who died on Sept. 11, 2001. Siller, 34, perished as he made his way through the Brooklyn Tunnel to the World Trade Center with 60 pounds of gear on his back.
In New York City, the Tunnel to Towers Run allows participants to retrace Siller's fateful footsteps in remembrance of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11.
Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to Building for America's Bravest, which builds smart homes for wounded combat veterans. The other 50 percent will be donated to the Newport Beach 1st Battalion, 1st Marines Foundation who are deployed in Afghanistan.
Newport Dunes is located at 1131 Back Bay Drive. For registration information, visit t2trun.org/newportbeach. Same day registration begins Sunday at 7 a.m.
