Why I Love All Things Middle School

Educationmom is a longtime school administrator who has a love for middle school.

Duran Duran, neon anything and everything, and Ricky Shroder were staples during my middle school days. (I know I’m dating myself.)Middle school was an interesting (for lack of a better word) time as I’m sure some, if not all of you, will recall. It’s an awkward time when the body is changing, the mind is rapidly developing, and emotions/hormones are raging. All of this happens while students are daily interacting with other students who are facing the same intense changes while trying to learn a whole lot of academic content in a contained environment called middle school. Do you miss it as much as I do?

Personally, I think middle school students get a back rap. I love middle school for a number of reasons. Middle school students are at a stage when they are learning how to handle all of their responsibilities. They are stretching to find more freedom, pushing the boundaries, and growing into their own. It’s an exciting time but can also be a trying time for students and families alike. From an administrator's standpoint having spent time with students K-high school, I find middle school kids to be the most enjoyable. Sure, most of them are taller than me, smell a little bit funny especially on warm days, and can spiral into a fit faster than a three-year old. Nevertheless, they understand my slightly sarcastic sense of humor, engage in meaningful and equally silly conversation, and respond to one's demonstration of genuine care. Middle schoolers are the most in need of personal attention (they love that I know each of them by name), care ("great job" goes so far), and demonstrate sincere appreciation at just the right time (I received the most heart-felt thank you notes from middle schoolers).

The best thing about being a middle school administrator?

1. No two days are the same. Not even close.

2. I get to say, "What were you thinking?" at least 10 times a day.
