Jodi And The Jury

Convicted killer Jodi Arias' jury deadlocked as to whether to sentence her to death for the killing of her on again, off again boyfriend, Travis Alexander. Arias was convicted of shooting and stabbing Travis multiple times while he was in the shower.

No need to go into all the details here. Those unaware of the case reside under rocks and probably don't read online publications.

The jury foreman announced Arias doesn't look like a killer and the decision to sentence her to death was beyond the collective understanding of law held by members of the jury. Essentially, he said she was too cute and they too stupid to sentence her to death.

I'm repeatedly surprised by those I hear say people are good despite all the evidence to the contrary. Sadly, women are capable of killing and other heinous acts as much as men. But somehow we culturally can't come to grips with that fact. So much so, that those women who kill their infant children and dump them in the trash receive relatively light sentences.

Our justice system which so often does everything it can not to provide justice allows for twelve ordinary people to make rulings on guilt. This is an awesome power. Those not capable of coming clean with the prosecutor during the jury selection won't be able to wash off the stain of injustice should they prove incapable of performing their sacred duty.

If guilt was not proven or a killing was done in such a manner as not to deserve the death penalty than the jury should make such a decision. But how many cases like the ones involving Jodi Arias or Casey Anthony do we need to experience before common sense prevails? Far too many I fear.
