Opinion: Newport's Pet Store Lies and Inhumane Profits

Russo’s is a convicted criminal of animal cruelty. Its sister, “I Heart Puppies”, supports canine cruelty proving disreputable out of the gate.

The line separating animal abuse from other forms of abuse and criminal behavior is much finer than most people would care to consider. The American Psychiatric Association considers animal cruelty one of the diagnostic criteria of a conduct disorder.

This connection is apparent in Newport’s pet store owners. Private business persons choosing to profit solely of which is legally proven in federal court,“ Inhumane Industry”, and is viewed as such by the entire nation. USDA Puppy Mill Dogs sold by Newport Beach's Russo’s and I Heart Puppies victimize families and their children by selling them under false claims and fraud. USDA Breeding is termed “inhumane” violating the welfare and federal rights of companion animals. Some may view it as Animal Rights. It is actually anti-torture of Companion Animals.

Washington D.C. is drafting legislation, cities and private Companies are implementing bans against the cruel pet store industry and its commercial breeders. Every semi-intelligent person can confirm, actions speak louder than pet store fraud.

Dan Digiacomo, owner of , pleaded guilty to Animal Cruelty charges (Penal Code 597.1(a)) on Oct. 3, 2005 and served three years probation until October 2008. He states on his website, “It is important for you to know Russo’s does not sell Puppy Mill dogs.” He also claims his breeders are champion, yet Trailane Kennels on his Quality breeder list is a Class “B” USDA Broker-Breeder and does scientific research on his dogs.

Corona del Mar's owner Brooke Bradford committed felony perjury in O.C. Superior Court against Carole Davis of the Companion Animal Protection Society.  The charges were later dismissed by a judge, thereby crushing a failed attempt to halt . The ruling was based on legal evidence of AWA violating breeders including one under government investigation for Federal Cruelty, who was caught shooting a Golden Retriever mother of puppies in the head while tied to a pole.  The two owners then visited this breeder in Nebraska, befriended a cold blooded canine murderer, then returned to CDM  promoting her puppy mill as, “ Among the Best in the country, they handpicked and know personally.”  Federal cruelty and canine murder is meaningless to I Heart Puppies.

It is 2012 Newport Beach. Puppy mill death and pet store cruelty are no longer acceptable in our nation or our city.  The Irvine Company has confirmed this. It is time our city and private businesses stop selling cruelty and become HUMANE.

Thanks for keeping the spotlight on the puppy mills

Very well written and right on target! When will Newport wake up? The fact that these people are still in business disgusts me and every person who patronizes other stores in that area. Get them out! Be done with it! If these creeps had any desire to go humane they would have done it by now!

Thank you for acknowledging them with your comment... they deserve to be heard...please help spread the facts that will save their lives.. cheers neighbor! :)

Newport Beach come on, get with the program. Irvine, Dana Point, West Hollywood, Lake Tahoe, Austin, TX, Laguna is next and soon L.A. GO HUMANE. Thanks Kelly for shining the light on these liars and supporters of evil. Do not support these puppy mill fronts, adopt from your local animal shelter that is overcrowded and killing daily, especially O.C. Shelter.

End puppy- and kitten- mills and end forever using animals for research. Animals are nothing like humans; use computer models instead.

Wow - what a shock and a sad thing to hear. I cannot wait till all cities are cruelty free and have no-kill shelters, and I will keep doing everything I can so I do my part. Thank you for sharing this story with us.

Pet Stores shod be outlawed period! People making money off inhumane acts to animals is pure evil.

The one store in Irvine is out of biz [but heard they were trying to reopen in MViejo?] , the stores in NB and CdM have longer roots, more ties.. it is just a matter of time. Keep up the good work, Kelly et al; your perseverance will previal. KO

I completely agree with you and the rest of our community... as does every civilized humane member of society once they have become fully informed of the facts through a cloud of fraud and lies.. The only persons or business that disagrees are the unconscionable, inhumane profiteers of their cruelty and death. Whether it be monetary, personal or political motivation.... they only agree because their lack of conscience motivated by greed and self entitlement pays big at the price of torture and death to 1.5 million caged imprisoned commercial breeding dogs.... being well informed in current operations of commercial breeders of Newport Pet Stores and the status of Newport itself often leaves me to feel just sad and sick...how could humans be so cruel to our companions's and Man's best friends... monstrous.

An ordinance banning USDA Puppy Mill dogs is the only solution for the city....Russo's and I Heart Puppies have many choices they are able to make.... The citizens of Newport Beach are hoping and still encouraging they take up an offer by CAPS for assistance in converting to a profitable Humane model where they will be able to still make good profits higher than any other city due to citizens care and exceptional lifestyle they provide for their canine companion family members...Inhumane torturous factory farming by the USDA is being banned by cities across the nation and is illegal sales now in our neighboring city. Irvine Company has banned them from further leasing retail space--- what does that tell you Newport Beach? With Newport's current USDA Track History and denying requests to mandate humane business to fall in line with values and ethics of Newport Citizens and the Nation our time to STEP UP TO THE PLATE with DIGNITY is slipping away into an Earned reputation as a deliberate Inhumane Puppy Mill Torture Profiteering City. Humaneness is an expectation from citizens, we should not have to beg our city leaders for such decent , ethical and moral practices that do not employ illegal fraudulent sales victimizing Newport Families.

Bravo Kelly, for continuing to stand up for mill and shelter dogs. It's just a matter of time before NB legislators step up and tkae action. I Heart Puppies and Russos are a stain on Newport Beach and it is high time they stopped lying to consumers about the conditions of the commercial breeding operations their animals come from. Kudos to you Kelly!

Thank you Carole Davis...a nice compliment coming from such a highly respected and effective legal organization such as CAPS and it is well received. I know the current investigation of Russo's and I Heart Puppies has been keeping you busy behind the scenes and Newport Citizens , constituents, and property owners are very much looking forward to your physical presence sometime soon in N.B. Newport Beach's problems of issues in relation to our city’s mistreatment of animals stem deep beyond it's continuing investments in profiting from the Inhumane Puppy Mill Trade. Our city's animal control is failing to address continuous state law violations of these stores and CDM Chamber of Commerce has aided I Heart Puppies in promoting Business Model Fraud and libel of Humane Newport Resident Protesters who speak out in possession of legal evidence of their AWA Federal Law violating Breeders. Our city's animal control has even gone to the lengths of supplying homeless Newport Cats to Inhumane Private Puppy Mill Business soliciting funds given to private business made payable to "The City of Newport Beach"....
Kelly Sawyer February 21, 2012 at 01:21 am
O.C. Humane Society has confirmed this was done solely through our Animal Control who is sole regulator and law enforcement of State Law over this store in which they are engaging in business of animal trade for profit. Our Newport homeless animals protection , safety, and legal advocacy is paid for by tax payers through a contract by the city where their care and treatment can be monitored and held to legal oversight and standard. Myself and concerned citizens will continue to demand answers from the city and council for which to this date, has failed to respond or address violations of protocol for our city employees soliciting profits payable to city. The topic of my next article in which the Citizens of Newport Beach need be made aware of the nature of our city’s shocking acts participating and profiting in various ways depriving our homeless of their legal advocacy and monitoring.....The city of my birth is becoming a heartbreaking and disillusioned place of residency for Humane, honest and decent citizens. Some of which are still unknowingly falling victim to the stores who's defrauding is being aided and abetted in unacceptable municipal involvement.. Your founder and Attorney has been helpful in guiding citizens to attempt to resolve these matters in hopes of restoring dignity, honor and humaneness to our beautiful respected city of Newport Beach in amicable, responsible and dignified resolvement of these unacceptable dealings.

Thank you for bringing into the light the ugly truth behind pet stores. Many cities across the country are taking an admirable stand against the inherent cruelty of puppy mills by banning the retail sale of dogs and cats. Newport Beach is lagging behind the times by continuing to allow pet stores to operate, and exploit both animals and humans. Society is evolving to embrace compassion and decry cruelty. Savvy consumers are increasingly more interested in adopting animals from shelters than purchasing them from retailers. Newport Beach can still maintain – and improve – its image as a model city by ending its partnership with unethical businesses such as pet stores. Converting to a humane business model is entirely feasible, and profitable! Newport Beach, please join the ranks of the other enlightened cities who have already made this prudent choice.

Millions of dogs die in shelters every year - including purebred dogs and puppies. Every dog "sold" in a pet store means another shelter dog dies. The cute puppies you see being sold in pet stores come from puppy mills and backyard breeders. Mother dogs are bred over and over, and most of these dogs and their offspring live in horrific conditions. Pet stores should not be allowed to sell dogs. Many pet store chains have stopped selling and are offering space for rescue groups to bring in dogs and cats for adoption. Hopefully Newport Beach will see the light and ban puppy sales in their jurisdiction.

This is disturbing beyond words!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! If you dont buy, they cant supply!!!! Why cant the public see this is HORRIFIC abuse beyond words!!! Breeding and raising sick puppies!!! The almighty dollar has blinded peoples choice to be moral in our time!!! GOOGLE puppy mills and then you will get educated on this!! DONT SHOP ADOPT!!!!
Kelly Ponticelli February 21, 2012 at 06:44 pm
People need to know what is involved when they buy a pet from a pet store. Countless dogs are suffering and dying due to starvation, abuse, and neglect at the hand of these mill owners. Education to the public, and harsher punishment for violators needs to happen if things are ever to change. Pet stores need to convert to stocking with shelter animals and many are making that transition to do so. It needs to be nation wide and only then will mills be put out of business.

Persons sometime stereo type persons who protest the violation of federal rights to companion animals as a bunch anti - business , uneducated , hippies defying corporate growth. Every humane advocate that protested I Heart Puppies in Corona Del Mar, are the highly educated, innovative, business owners and contributors to society most persons would consider a privilege to know....if you think were crazy, you may want to cancel your subscription to FORBES... they happen to think we are highly valid and credible.... Don't be so fearful of honest ethical change Newport Beach. You passing up huge financial growth and opportunity that is the future.... It is Humane Industry, and several businesses in Newport are already profiting highly from their decry of cruelty sales....Three dog bakery, Just food for dogs, Muttropolis at Fashion Island..etc....These stores and owners are fine examples of humane business profit opportunity available and to be invested in Newport Beach...educate yourself with this article.....http://www.forbes.com/sites/allenstjohn/2012/02/22/where-not-to-buy-a-dog-the-pet-store-connection-to-the-business-of-puppy-mills/
