Hoag Staff Honored for Kindness

Three members of the Hoag Hospital staff receive Heroes with Heart Awards for consistently showing acts of kindness while on duty.

A doctor and two nurses from Hoag Hospital were recently honored for showing kindness while on the job.

Dr. James Shen, Nicole Bryant and Olivia Lustro were honored at the Heroes with Heart Awards ceremony hosted by the Trauma Intervention Program of Orange County. Shen, Bryant and Lustro each received several nominations for their  "consistent acts of kindness while on duty," hospital officials reported.

Bios provided by Hoag Hospital:

Dr. James Shen - He has worked for Hoag Hospital Irvine for three years. Shen started out in New York at Beth Israel Medical Center and was the Chief Resident there. He went on to work with Doctors without Borders in Indonesia for three months and then transferred to Huntington Beach Hospital before going to Hoag Irvine. Shen is passionate about working in the ED because he enjoys the challenges of a dynamic work environment. He always anticipates the unexpected, likes keeping on his feet and is humbled by his job. He is kind, caring and loved by his patients as well as his peers. He is a great teacher and has a ‘heart of gold’. In his off time, Dr. Shen loves to travel, surf and spend time with his wife.

Nicole Bryant - Nicole Bryant, RN has been working for Hoag Hospital over five years now. She started at Hoag Irvine for the grand opening almost three years ago. Her past experience has included being an ED RN for 13 years. She truly loves the ED and hasn’t worked anything else! Baylor Richardson hospital was her first job as an RN, then two trauma centers in Utah, and Harbor UCLA to name a few. She is passionate about being an ED Charge Nurse because she enjoys being able to help a person and their family during a critical time in their life. She likes making a difference with patients and their families, as well as our staff at HHI. Nikki is recognized for always putting others first, and being a positive and supportive leader. Some of her hobbies include running races, biking and video gaming. Nikki has been married for 17 years with three girls. 

Olivia Lustro - May 17,2010 Olivia began her RN Career in the Emergency Department at Hoag Hospital. Immediately after hire, her peers began to describe her as self-motivated, always smiling, compassionate and nurturing  to patients and other team members.She is very proud that she originally attended Berkley, and is currently in a Nurse Practitioner  program at UCI. Many of our ED team members  have stated that she is the biggest influence on others going to school. She has recently become  engaged to her true love, Louie Cota. Olivia is recognized as a fantastic singer, in fact ask her about her Karaoke experience.
