OC Rescue Mission Requests Help to Feed Needy

As the holiday season approaches, the Orange County Rescue Mission is prepping to serve more than 20,000 meals weekly to the hungry, but the organization cannot fulfill the orders alone.

The Orange County Rescue Mission is in urgent need of the community's help to be able to provide food for men, women and children throughout the county during the fall and winter months. Jim Palmer, president of the Orange County Rescue Mission, said the need for monetary donations has never been greater.

“What most people don’t realize is that their contributions will stretch much further if they give monetary donations directly to organizations in need, as opposed to purchasing food items and donating them,” Palmer explained. “The fact is, during the fall and winter seasons, the number of mouths to feed increases dramatically, and we need the public’s help in order to keep up with demand.”

With the donations it receives, the Rescue Mission is able to buy food in bulk at discounted prices due to business relationships it has established with local food providers.

“By donating $35 you can provide 24 meals to those in need, feeding a single person three meals a day for more than a week,” Palmer said. “In fact, a donation of $35 breaks down to a cost of only $1.48 for an entire meal, which is less than the cost of a morning cup of coffee.”

The Orange County Rescue Mission provides food daily to residents in its transitional living facilities, members of the homeless community are fed through its chili van and meals are given to those in need through partnerships with local food banks.
