OC Kids Learn to Sail In Newport Beach

By Susan Hoffman

Twenty fifth-graders from Huntington Beach had a chance to sail aboard 40-foot boats Saturday for the first time in Newport Beach.

The sailing opportunity was made possible by the El Viento Foundation, which helps prepare students from the underprivileged Oak View neighborhood for college through educational enrichment.

“Today is an opportunity for our kids to see what they can do, basically, the world is their oyster,” Colleen Mensel, CEO of El Viento, said.

The kids took turns steering the boats and crewing, and also received disposable cameras so they could take part in a photo scavenger hunt while onboard.

“Today was a fun experience, I got to experience new things and I got to help the captain pull in the main sheet," Clarisa, a fifth grade student, said.
