Wednesday Newport Beach Essentials: Home Safety Tips, Free Fair Admission and More

1. Senior care expert Sherri Snelling, author of "A Cast of Caregivers" will speak from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the Oasis Evelyn Hart Event Center. Snelling will explain how to make your home a safe and livable place where you can stay forever. The Oasis Senior Center is located at 801 Narcissus Ave. in Corona del Mar.

2. It's We Care Wednesday at the Orange County Fair. Anyone who donates one new children's book, or three gently used children books, today will get free admission today from noon to 4 p.m.

3. Save the date! The Newport Beach Police Department will be celebrating National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bonita Canyon Sports Park. The event will include crime and drug prevention information, home security and child safety tips and more. The Newport Beach Fire Department will also be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers. 4. Wouldn’t it be cool if there were an off switch when the media go overboard on news events you don’t care about? With that in mind, the London Guardian added a button to its homepage that gave readers the option to eliminate all royal baby coverage. 5. Today will start off with cloudy skies, but the sun will eventually shine. Temperatures near the coast will be in the low 70s, while inland areas will see highs in the mid to upper 80s.
