Teens Rescued from Rocks at Big Corona Beach

An 18-year-old female suffered a head injury and a teenage boy was cut on his arms and legs after getting trapped in the rocks between Big Corona and Little Corona beaches.

Two teens who were trapped in the rocks and caves below the cliffs at Corona del Mar State Beach were rescued by emergency responders Saturday night, a fire captain reported.

The incident took place about 7:25 p.m. when an 18-year-old female and a teenage male got trapped east of Tower #5 at Corona del Mar State Beach, between Big Corona Beach and Little Corona Beach in the rocks and caves below the cliffs along Ocean Boulevard, according to Newport Beach Fire Department Capt. Glenn White.

"Two teens were trapped in a rocky inaccessible shore line with an incoming high tide and 4 to 5 foot surf," White said in a released statement.

Ten emergency responders from the Newport Beach Fire Department immediately jumped into the water on arrival, some with paddle boards and others who were swimming.

"All rescuers were being thrown against the rocks by the large surf," White said.

The female victim, a resident of Santa Ana, and the teenage male, a resident of Los Angeles, were each transported by paddle board to a Sheriff's Harbor department boat. The female suffered a head injury, the male suffered cuts, bruises and swelling to his arms and legs, White said.

Firefighters also suffered several cuts during their rescue efforts.

The teens were taken to the Orange County Sheriff's Department Harbor Patrol on Bayside Drive in CDM where they were treated by paramedics. An ambulance transported the teenagers to Hoag Hospital for further treatment and evaluation, White said.

A total of 15 firefighters, paramedics and lifeguards from the Newport Beach Fire Department, as well as the Newport Beach Marine Department and the Orange County Sheriffs Harbor Department helped in rescuing the teens.
