Teen Driver's Provisional License Expired Prior to Deadly Crash

Abdulrahman Alyahyan, 17, was driving with an expired provisional driver's license when his car slammed into a tree in Newport Beach, killing all five teenagers in the car.

The teenager who was behind the wheel in a deadly Memorial Day crash in Newport Beach that claimed the live of five Irvine teens had an expired provisional license, according to a report in the Daily Pilot.

The Department of Motor Vehicles originally reported Abdulrahman M. Alyahyan, 17, did not have a license or driver's permit when he crashed a 2008 Infiniti into a tree on Jamboree Road. But on Thursday a DMV audit showed Alyahyan was issued a learner's permit in January 2012. That summer he passed a behind-the-wheel driving test and was granted an interim driver's license valid for 90 days while the Department of Homeland Security verified he was in the country legally, the newspaper reported.

DHS denied Alyahyan's clearance in August because the documents proving he was in the U.S. legally would expire in 60 days.

In February Alyahyan received another interim provisional license good for an additional 90 days, while his paperwork passed through DHS. That provisional license expired about two weeks prior to the fatal crash, according to the audit.

At the time of the fatal crash on May 27, Alyahyan's license application was still pending, according to the DMV audit. Passengers Aurora Cabrera, 16, her sister, Robin, 17, and juniors Nozad Al Hamawendi, 17, and Cecilia D. Zamora, 17, were also killed in the crash.
