Sandy Just a Blip for John Wayne Airport

Only a handful of flights are canceled out of Orange County's airport because of the East Coast hurricane.

Hurricane Sandy is barely a blip on John Wayne Airport's radar. Only a handful of flights between Orange County and the East Coast were canceled Monday because of the storm.

An afternoon and an evening flight on United Airlines from John Wayne Airport to the East Coast were axed Sunday night and again Monday, said airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge.

The airport has many connecting flights to the East Coast that stop in Chicago, Denver and Dallas, but it was unclear how those would be affected by the storm, Wedge said.

Passengers were advised to call their airline before heading to the airport to see if their flight is affected by the storm, Wedge said.

More than 8,900 flights across the country have been canceled, including 129 scheduled to fly in or out of LAX on Monday and Tuesday, according to airport officials.
