PHOTOS: Memorial to Founder of Russell Surfboards

Robert Russell Brown hanged himself Saturday, according to the Orange County coroner's office.

Flowers and sympathy cards have been placed by family and friends of Robert Russell Brown in front of his surfboard shop in Newport Beach.

According to the Orange County coroner's office, Brown, 63, hanged himself and was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon at Hoag Hospital. 

Brown opened the doors to Russell Surfboards back in 1967 and since then had become well-known for his handmade surfboards. A paddleout and tribute is planned for Brown on Sept. 10 at 7:30a.m. at Blackie's, next to the Newport Pier.
