PCH Shrinks to Single Lanes Starting Today

Road work begins on two projects along portions of Coast Highway through Newport Beach.

Road crews begin work today on two construction projects that will choke traffic on Coast Highway in Newport Beach.

The first project involves the Orange County Sanitation District's Rocky Point Pump Station. Construction will reduce traffic along West Coast Highway to one lane in each direction between Tustin Avenue and the Balboa Bay Club entrance. In addition, parking on the north side of the road and left-hand turns might be restricted, but sidewalks will remain open.

The three-week project will link the newly constructed pump station to existing force mains that send waste to the sanitation district's Huntington Beach treatment plant. Construction will be done around the clock, but the noisiest work will take place daily between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to minimize disturbance to nearby residents.

The second project -- being conducted by Southern California Edison to upgrade its facilities -- reduces traffic along Coast Highway to a single lane in each direction between Bayside Drive and Superior Avenue/Balboa Boulevard. Construction will take place weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is estimated to be completed in mid-November.
