Newport Won't Hold Additional Fire Ring Meeting With AQMD

Newport Beach officials say the next meeting on calendar for the fire ring debate is in July with the California Coastal Commission.

At a public hearing regarding fire rings earlier this month in Huntington Beach, Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido said a similar meeting would be held in Newport Beach, but a city official said that isn't the case.

City spokeswoman Mary Locey said Newport Beach will not be hosting another public hearing regarding the fire pit debate with Pulido, a South Coast Air Quality Management board member, regarding the city's move to get rid of the 27 fire rings at Big Corona Beach and the 33 fire rings near the Balboa Pier.

"The city is awaiting the next Coastal Commission hearing in July, as there have been multiple public meetings regarding the fire ring issue - Parks, Beaches & Recreation Commission, City Council and Coastal Commission - that have taken place already," Locey said.

Newport Beach officials maintain the fire rings pose health impacts to residents who live near the fire rings.
