Newport Receives Check for Energy Efficient Civic Center

The Newport Beach City Council received a check from Southern California Edison last week for the recently completed Civic Center.

The savings by design incentive check was presented by Eddie Marquez, of Southern California Edison, in the amount of $261,150.14, for the building's state-of-the-art lighting, mechanics and design features.

"The incentive will help the city offset the cost of building energy efficiently," Marquez said. "The features will help the city operate energy efficiently for the years to come saving an estimated $50,000 per year in electricity and natural gas costs."

Resident Jim warren, who lives near the Newport Beach Civic Center, spoke at Tuesday night's council meeting and criticized lighting at the building.

"This past Memorial Day Weekend lights were on in the building from Friday night through Monday morning. There was no one on visible in sight," Warren said. "We are taxpayers and we don't like wasting our money on these needless amenities."
