Newport Native Scores Twice As U.S. Water Polo Takes First

Woman's U.S. water polo beat Brazil 11-1 to take first in the FINA World League Prelim along with the men's team.

KK Clark scored four goals, leading the U.S. women's national water polo team to an 11-1 victory over Brazil today at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos to take first place in the FINA World League Prelims with a 4-0 record.

Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach) and Danielle Warde (Newport Beach) each scored twice and Kiley Neushul, Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills) and Monica Seidemann once each.

The U.S. led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, 7-1 at halftime and 8- 1 after three quarters in its second victory over Brazil in three days. The U.S. won 10-0 Saturday.

The U.S. outscored its opponents 40-15 in the tournament that will help determine seedings for the FINA World League Super Finals, which will be played Saturday through June 6 in Beijing.

The U.S. men also finished first, defeating Brazil, 13-7, today as former UC Irvine standout Brandon Johnson scored three goals and Matt DeTrane and Collin Smith two each as the team avenged a 13-12 shootout loss to Brazil Saturday.

The U.S. led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and 8-4 at halftime. The third quarter was scoreless.

Former UC Irvine standout Griffin Lerman, Shea Buckner (Villa Park), Paul Reynolds (Santa Ana), Alex Bowen, Tommy Corcoran and Michael Rosenthal each scored once as the U.S. completed tournament play with a 3-1 record, outscoring its opponents 71-23.

The U.S. defeated Canada, 22-3, earlier today, as Reynolds scored five goals and DeTrane, Johnson and Rosenthal three each.

The U.S. led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter, 11-0 at halftime and 16-3 after three quarters.

Bowen, Lerman and Smith scored twice each and Corcoran and Alex Obert once each.

The tournament will help determine seedings for the FINA World League Super Finals, which will be played June 11-16 in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
