Newport Bay Closed After 500 Gallon Sewage Spill

The bay area from Bayside Drive Beach to Carnation Cove in Newport Bay remain closed Thursday to swimmers due to a sewage spill.

A half mile section of Newport Bay remains closed to swimming and diving today due to a 500 gallon sewage spill, the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Ocean Water Protection Program reported.

The bay area from Bayside Drive Beach to Carnation Cove in Newport Bay were closed Wednesday about 10:30 a.m. after 500 gallons of sewage were spilled, a health official reported.

"The city of Newport Beach had a blockage in a sewer pipeline caused by roots and rags," Larry Honeybourne, Orange County Health Care spokesman, said. "They lost about 1,000 gallons and managed to recover about 500, but another 500 gallons went down the storm drain and into Newport Bay bay near Carnation Cove."
