New Principal Coming to Newport Elementary

Newport Elementary School will have a new principal before the new school year starts, a school district official announced Friday.

Pending school board approval, Rich Rodriguez -- who has been the principal at Costa Mesa's TeWinkle Middle School since 2010 -- will become the principal at Newport Elementary School, according to Laura Boss, spokeswoman for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

During his time at TeWinkle, Rodriguez created programs that raised the school's API score to over 800. Prior to TeWinkle, Rodriguez was the principal at Newport Coast Elementary.

"His legacy for leading his instructional team into developing a strong professional learning community is still present at Newport Coast Elementary today," Boss said in a released statement.

The school board will receive the recommendation to transition Rodriguez to Newport Elementary on July 1.
