New Bike Committee to Meet Monday

The first Bicycle Master Plan Oversight Committee meeting will be held Monday, June 17 at 4:30 p.m. at the Newport Beach Civic Center.

Public talks about bike safety in Newport Beach were on hold the last several months while the new Bicycle Master Plan Oversight Committee was formed, but the discussions will resume next week, a city official reported.

The BMPOC meeting will be held on Monday, June 17 at 4:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Newport Beach Civic Center, 100 Civic Center Dr. The meeting's agenda includes an overview of the Bicycle Master Plan project, a bicycle improvement project update, introductions of committee members and a report from the Newport Beach Police Department regarding recent biking statistics and enforcement activities.

According to Brad Sommers, the city's senior civil engineer, the BMPOC will "provide guidance and a public forum to the preparation of a comprehensive, city-wide bicycle master plan."

The BMP, which would take about 12-18 months to develop, would promote cycling, improve bike facilities, create an education and outreach plan and balance the needs of all roadway users in Newport Beach.
