Junior Lifeguards Prepping for Championships

About 2,000 junior ocean lifeguards compete in the 2013 California Surf Life Saving Association Regional Lifeguard Championships in Newport Beach.

Thousands of junior ocean lifeguards will compete in Newport Beach this week at the 2013 California Surf Life Saving Association's Regional Lifeguard Championships.

About 2,000 junior ocean lifeguards, ages 8 to 17-years-old, from across California will compete on Friday in the Regional Lifeguard Championships, according to event organizers. Each junior lifeguard will be vying for bragging rights to be called the top junior lifeguards in the state.

The junior lifeguards will compete in a variety of exercises including ocean swims, beach runs, surf races, run-swim-run and rescue paddleboard races. Junior guards will compete in their age groups individually and in teams using the same lifesaving skills and devices as professional adult ocean lifeguards.

The championships will take place on Friday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the south side of the Newport Beach Pier between 18th and 20th Streets, adjacent to the Newport Beach Lifeguard Headquarters located at 70 Newport Pier.
