It's easy to find pizza in Newport Beach, but if you're looking for a New York-style slice, you might want to stop by Johnny's Real New York Pizza.

A large, cheesy, authentic New York pie had been a rare commodity in Newport Beach until Johnny's came to town. On Saturday, John Younesi, a Newport Beach resident and owner of Johnny's Real New York Pizza, celebrated the opening of his second pizzeria in the city. Mayor Keith Curry attended the event and expressed delight at the newest Johnny's location.

"We've got some great restaurants in Newport Beach," Curry said. "But what everyone needs and what everyone wants is a great slice."

At Saturday's grand opening, kids excitedly fidgeted with their balloon animals and hats as they waited in line to have their face either painted or sketched by caricature artists. Johnny's employees were busy dashing around the outdoor tables and chairs, offering everyone free pizza and fresh garlic knots. Gary King added a New York City vibe to the event, playing jazzy tunes on his saxophone at the entrance to the restaurant.

Younesi, a Queens native, opened the first Johnny's Real New York Pizza on PCH in Corona del  Mar in 2011. Younesi and his partners, including Terri Freedman, pride themselves on creating a pizzeria that is nothing short of authentic.

"It's authentic New York Pizza that you can't find over here. That's it. And all of the owners are from New York," Freedman said with a laugh.

Johnny’s menu features six signature pizzas, including the Solattzo (fresh mushrooms, olives, onions, bell peppers, artichokes, mozzarella and tomato sauce), the Andolini (housemade meatballs, Genoa salami, sweet Italian sausage, fresh herbs, mozzarella and tomato sauce) and the Fontaine (pepperoni, mozzarella and tomato sauce). The pizzeria also serves sandwiches, salads, mozarella sticks, garlic knots and more.

Younesi said he hopes to work with the Irvine Co. to open more locations  in Newport Beach.
