Hoag Receives Grant for Healthy Brain Program

The $450,000 grant was awarded to Hoag Neurosciences Institute from the UniHealth Foundation.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian received a $450,000 grant to continue helping community members maintain a healthy brain, officials announced last week.

The grant was awarded to the Hoag Neurosciences Institute, which has specialists treating addiction medication, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, plus other memory and cognitive disorders,  from the UniHealth Foundation. According to hospital officials, the grant will be used to partially fund the Orange County Vital Brain Aging Program at Hoag through 2016.

“This generous grant allows us to continue fulfilling our mission of focusing on healthy brain aging through risk-factor management, adoption of cognitively healthier lifestyles, and annual monitoring of memory and cognition,” Dr. William Shankle,  a board-certified neurologist at Hoag, said in a released statement.

The Vital Brain Program, established in 2010, offers public seminars, continuing medical education training for physicians, clinical care guidelines, online resources, self-assessments, and in-person cognitive assessment at the Hoag Neurosciences Institute, the Oasis Senior Center in Corona del Mar, Hoag Hospital Irvine and Hoag Health Center in Huntington Beach.

The Vital Brain Program has also partnered with Hoag to conduct a pilot study to better understand how cognitive healthcare is delivered in primary care settings.

“With the rapid aging of the United States, cognitive impairment is imposing a major health and socioeconomic threat to our community,” Shankle said. “While Alzheimer’s disease is a significant cause of cognitive impairment, other more treatable conditions are also common causes, including depression, sleep disorders, cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, pulmonary disease, and renal disease.”
