Hoag Ranked Among Best Hospitals in U.S.

Newport Beach's Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian earns national recognition from U.S. News & World Report for its orthopedic care.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has been ranked as one of the best hospitals in the country, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

The annual medical center rankings were released Tuesday, ranking Newport's Hoag Hospital No. 43 in the country for orthopedics, No. 13 in the state and No. 7 in the Los Angeles area. According to the report, Hoag was ranked as high-performing in cancer, geriatrics, nephrology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, gynecology, neurology and neurosurgery, and urology.

Hoag officials said the hospital is proud of the accolades.

"Being recognized as one of America's best hospitals is a wonderful affirmation of the efforts of our talented staff, expert physicians and committed volunteers," Richard Afable, the hospital's president and CEO, said. "It says that we are serving our community well and in a way that is comparable to the best healthcare institutions in the country."

The magazine and research partner RTI International surveyed nearly 10,000 specialists and went through data on death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation, among other factors. The top hospitals overall in the United States were, in order, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore; the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.; the Cleveland Clinic; and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
