Investigation Continues into High-Speed Boat Crash

A speeding cigarette boat that crashed into a smaller boat over the weekend in Newport Harbor may have reached speeds six times higher than the area's 5 knot speed limit, and the drivers could be arrested or cited, according to a report in the Daily Pilot.

The crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when a 25-foot cigarette boat traveling at a high rate of speed hit a smaller, slower boat, Newport Beach Fire Capt. Glenn White reported. One man and three women suffered cuts, difficulty breathing, a fracture and one person lost consciousness when the smaller boat capsized, White said.

As of Tuesday, no arrests had been made and no citations were issued in connection with the boat crash, but the investigation is ongoing.

"At the conclusion of the investigation, one or both of the drivers may be cited," Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Jeff Hallock told the Daily Pilot.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash, the newspaper reported.
