Crystal Cathedral's New Name Revealed

The famous glass church will now be called Christ Cathedral. The change was announced during the ordination of four Catholic priests at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange revealed the new name of the Crystal Cathedral on Saturday: Christ Cathedral.

The new identity was announced during the ordination of four Catholic priests at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove. Bishop Tod D. Brown disclosed the name to more than 1,500 people who attended the ceremony.

"It was important that any change of name for the cathedral itself be respectful of its spiritual legacy while accommodating our needs to clearly define this important facility as a Catholic center of worship,” Brown said.

Church officials said Brown submitted the proposed name to the Congregation of Bishops and received approval on April 26. Also on Saturday, for the future Catholic cathedral.

In February, the Diocese of Orange of the famous glass church and later in renaming it, which sparked both serious and silly suggestions.

Although the diocese now owns the church, the first Catholic Mass won't be celebrated there anytime soon because the Crystal Cathedral's congregation is still leasing the church for its services.

“Catholics throughout the diocese, and all across America, are eagerly anticipating that important day,” Brown said.

Thanks for the info Donald. I have never understood this but I'm not a catholic. Sorry.

Does this mean I will go to purgatory? Should I be worried?

Christians believe in the Trinity. God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. A great explanation can be found in the Athanasian Creed (500 A.D.). All distinct but one.
Ken Lopez June 10, 2012 at 10:05 am
The Trinity is not a solely Catholic doctrine is applies to all Christians. The creed I referenced uses the term catholic. It is not the same as the Catholic church but means universal.

How about "Property Tax Free House of Brainwashing"? It is hard to understand all these superstitious people in the 21st century still worship the supernatural with medieval practices.

LMAO. The book they believe in was written when the people thought the earth was still flat. Like all mythologies, the myths are designed to help frightened people attempt to explain the unknown, to give them solace. In many cases they include not only the myths, but the morality of the time. In some ways that can be good. For instance the God-like character in the new testament is a common man, an everyday hero. He railed against the wealthy and was a champion for the poor and disenfranchised. He was a fighter for the underdog, walking among those that had nothing, those who had been stricken, the outcasts and giving of the largess of the world to them, from health to food. He turned no one away and didn't demand their "following him" to be beneficiaries of what he had to give.
Unfortunately the current followers of this mythology have made a full time effort to redefine him as a supply-sider who believes that each person should help themselves to whatever they can get, and once they get it, only a small share, if any, should be passed down to the downtrodden... and only if the downtrodden believe what you want them to believe and act the way you want them to act. One of the worst at this "we only help if you embrace" is the current Catholic Church. Mother Theresa they aren't. WWJD? Tell them they blew it.

Frank, whose fault is it that the congregation failed?
MayMom June 10, 2012 at 06:27 pm
First, all religions have their problems. Trinity Broadcasting, is going through a thorough investigation of fraud. Saddleback asked their congregants to take up donations to help pay their debts while their Pastor flies around the world selling his and his wifes books. A Georgian Pastor was just arrested for hitting his daughter. A Florida Church just had their Pastor hang an likeness of President Obama. The Diocese of Orange did not throw Reverend Schuller out of his Cathedral. They had financial problems and lost their building. The Diocese would have spent a lot more money to purchase land and build a Cathedral from the ground up. Catholic Charities is one of the largest charities around the world. They support many different needs. They help over 10 million people a year of ALL faiths and even some with no faith. I'm not saying the Catholic faith has not had it's problems, it certainly has. This Cathedral will be a central location for the daily business of our Diocese. I do not criticize those who don't have faith, each one of us has the right to believe what we want. I would appreciate the same respect.

Although I don't believe in organized religions, which I was a part of for many years, I do respect those of you who think differently, and, AV Mom, I appreciate that people like you give me the respect that I deserve as well. Thank you.

I fear that religious organizations are attempting to take over the US Government. This was never meant to be and yet they are exempt from taxes, while they build these overly ornate and expensive Cathedrals and take money from people who sometimes can't afford to pay their rent. Do you really think that God would approve of this behavior? Hmmmmmmm!!!

And I'm sure that the homosexual population would respect their desire to enter into marriage. But the Morman and Catholic Churches had no problem funding their hate-filled proposition to deny them equal rights to enter into a state recognized contractual relationship. No one ever said that either Church had to perform religious ceremonies of marriage to same sex couples, but they funded and denied thousands equal rights under the law. And to think that one of these churches taught polygamy as a mans right as part of their scripture, and the other has their ministry molesting children and then plays "hide the molester, and let them work with kids again" rather than turning them over to civil authorities for their criminal activities.
I have no problem with personal faith in the mythology of your choice. I have major problems with the business of organized religion.Especially when that business believes in rights for some, but not all.

Religion does NOT equal Faith.
If someone feels that rubbing green mud into their belly button helps bring them closer to their mythological deity, more power to them. They aren't hurting anyone and they get joy and pleasure from their faith experience. But when they say that other faiths are wrong, that they are the one-an-only correct faith; when they teach their adherents to tell others the same; when they hold that by just their faith they are special; then it is a sick and twisted environment ripe for them to trample on the rights of others in the name of that faith. And they do. ALL THE TIME! Look at the financial statements on Prop-8. [side note: My good wyfe and I have been married for 21 years and I have no interest in a same gender marriage for myself, but it is criminal to deny it to two consenting adults that do want it.]

I'm curious, are you a donor to the Catholic church or do you donate significant financial or volunteer support of any organization helping humanity?
Richard June 10, 2012 at 09:14 pm
The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one and the same.

This is reflective of the sustainability of the one true Cristian church, belief in Crist our Lord.

The reference to Tower of Babel is apt indeed if services or programs wil be conducted in multiple languages?
Lily June 10, 2012 at 10:46 pm
What's wrong with you people?
Renee G June 11, 2012 at 12:40 am
Do you think they'll have services in more than one language?
MFriedrich June 11, 2012 at 02:08 am
Some days an news story comes along and the irony, it's simply too rich.
The church that has too many sex scandals to count plus millions of dollars in victim settlements across the world (2005 OC diocese paid victims $100 million for Bishop Todd Brown's escapades) has decide to take up residence in a.....wait for it......glass house? And yet strangely appropriate. This is the best thing to happen since Benedict abolished limbo in 2007, after milennia of the doctrine, and then followed up by declaring being ready to be infallible all over again. Organize your life around this if you wish. Just leave me out of it.

Hopefully the 1648 Westphalian Doctrine of national sovereignty, which was created after the 1618-1648 Thirty Years War, which was relegious war between the Catholics and Protestants in western Europe, is still valid in meaning and substance.
In the Bible God scattered the peoples who built the Tower of Babel by confusing their language. The primary requirement of a nation-state is a single language culture. I don't think principles change.

Barton ML, the trend for developers is to build large scale apartment housing now instead of single family homes. I think it's fine to respond to market demands like that (still sad Wild Rivers was a victim of development though), but I wish they would build more family sized rentals. I think that's an untapped market. Sigh, does no one listen to me and my great ideas?

met00: John Paul II embraced all religions. He brought them all together to try to stop the hatred. There are Catholics out there that do believe in equality in marriage and birth control. Just because I differ in that doesn't mean I need to leave my faith. It is a very different world than when the Bible was written. I lead a decent life. I try every day to do something to make a difference in another persons world. I am raising my children to do the right things. Our relationship with God doesn't solely lie in the buildings where we worship. It lies in the things we do outside those walls. I have never once tried to tell somebody that their religion was wrong. I have been told by other Christian believers that I needed to leave my religion because it was wrong. If you go to my Church, you will find people of different religions sitting among us. Not because they want to be Catholics, but because they love the message they are hearing and they feel comfortable. Yes there were scandals that were tough to deal with. We certainly aren't the only faith to have had these problems. We just happen to be the one that took the biggest hit in the press. This is a discussion that could go on forever. A discussion that should be respectful and calm.

Renee G: A very large group of Catholics are non English speaking.

If they aren't working to diminish it, then they are working against the institution of nation-state, which has been the best way to enable growing numbers of people like Lily a higher standard of living.

@AV Mom.
Like I said "Religion does NOT equal Faith". Faith that brings you solace, is a good thing. Faith that leads you to treat others as you wish to be treated, with respect and caring, is a good thing. Faith that helps you find your place in the world, is a good thing. Faith that helps you heal our world is a good thing. Faith, personal faith, that fills you with peace and loving kindness, is a good thing. That is NOT what the organized religion provides. Faith is internal, organized religion is external. That you derive your faith from a book that was written by a bunch of men between 1900-1700 years ago (and then cherry-picked as to what writings to include), that's really your business. That from those writings you have selected those that provide you with a positive and enlightened approach to your fellow man, again your business (but I am glad to hear it as so many others do not). But the international organization called the RCC is NOT you. They are a criminal enterprise (and I say this with two of my in-laws being clergy) that spews a message of hate and intolerance, and has done so against one group or another for my entire life. The RCC's recent crackdown on the Nuns is yet another example of how dysfunctional the organization is in terms of it's alignment with the teachings that they proclaim to uphold. Hold on to your personal faith, from what you have said it seems to be good and kind no mater where it stems from.
LogicDog June 11, 2012 at 07:11 pm
Renee, I think you're incorrect when you state that "the primary requirement of a nation-state is a single-language culture". That's simply not true.
Switzerland is a country with several "official" languages, depending upon where you are, and it is one of the most stable nation states in recent human history. Canada also has two official languages and does just fine. Language is not the defining criteria for a successful nation state -- tolerance, rather than xenophobia, most definitely is.
Renee G June 11, 2012 at 08:13 pm
Sure, things can go along with little frinction if you've got very high per person income like Switzerland. With Canada, I don't know if the French Canadians feel closer to the English speaking Canadians or to the French.
Without a common language, people are seperated from each other, and are a nation in name only - there is no interaction between the groups - how could there be unless one brought an interpreter along.
