Coyote Kills Small Newport Dog

The coyote attack reportedly happened behind the Ralphs grocery center near Westcliff Drive and Irvine Avenue. Police have no record of the incident.

A small dog was recently killed by a coyote while walking with its owner in Newport Beach, the pet owner's mother reported.

The fatal brawl between the animals happened on May 18 when the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, took an early morning walk with her two small dogs near Westcliff Drive and Irvine Avenue. One of the woman's dog was on a leash, but the other dog, Sandy, was not and ended up running off behind the Ralphs grocery store after something caught her attention.

"The next thing my daughter heard and saw was a coyote running off with her little dog, screaming until it was dead," the woman's mother wrote in an email. "So a warning to residents to carefully watch your pets. Coyotes are out for food and will stop at nothing to prey on anything."

Valerie Schomburg, senior animal control officer at the Newport Beach Police Department, said Monday she had no information about the coyote attack.

"When dogs are off leash, the coyote sees the dogs running around as a food source and will attempt to capture it," Schomburg said. "We have had no sightings of coyotes in this area at all."

Schomburg said residents are encouraged to walk their dogs on a leash 6' or less.

"Coyotes won't approach a human with a dog when they are so close together," Schomburg said.
