Coastal Commission to Vote on Fire Rings

The California Coastal Commission will take up the Newport Beach fire ring issue on Wednesday at its meeting in San Diego.

The fate of the 60 fire rings at Big Corona Beach and near the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach is in the hands of the California Coastal Commission.

On Wednesday the Coastal Commission will hold a hearing and vote on whether to approve or deny Newport Beach's permit request to removed the fire rings. In a recent report from the Coastal Commission's staff, a recommendation to deny the removal of the Newport Beach fire rings was given.

According to the report, getting rid of the 27 rings at Big Corona Beach and the 33 near the Balboa Pier deny the public’s access to a “popular form of lower cost public recreation.”

No! They should leave them--even if based solely on the petition that garnered over 5,000 signatures. The majority have shown that they want the fire rings to remain--and the city government and a select few individuals shouldn't be able to decide the fate of the fire rings for everyone else. The government's supposed to be of the people, for the people, and by the people--not against the people.

The Coastal Commission should allow NB to remove the fire rings. They are dangerous to our safety; harmful noxious fumes ar emitted that attack our lungs; they detract from the clean natural look of the Beaches, and attract ne'er do wells from far and wide.

They have removed the ability to put a FIREplace that burns wood from any new construction. That should tell you something.

Unfortunately, Orange County is not Kansas anymore. Too many residents and beachgoers are affected by the pollution, smoke and soot day after day, night after night. Most people will opt for the return of clean, salty, fresh air rather than the inhalation of toxic chemicals from the burn-pits.

Ohh stop won't you. The fire-pits contribute nothing in pollution when compared to all those folks driving "over-size" SUV vehicles, hundred thousand dollar luxury vehicles, and other such "toys" that get an average of 20 mph. A simple rule limiting the hours of use of the firepits -- say Thurs, Friday and Saturday nights (7 p.m. to 1 a.m.) from May to Sept would solve everyone's goals of minimizing pollution while retaining a key piece of family nostalgia and history in Newport Beach. Can't we all just get along!!?? Jim M.

The proposed removal of the fire pits is just more Newport elitism. The true motivation here is to keep as many "outsiders" away from "our" beaches as possible.
